ART CONTEST
DRAWINGS OF THE SEGOVIA MINT
Colegio C.E.I.P. "Eresma", Segovia Primary School
The Eresma Primary School, in Segovia, organizes a CULTURAL WEEK every year. This year, for the 10th edition (May 14-18, 2001), the title "The European Currency, our new Money", was selected.
As part of the week's activities, on the 14th, a group of nearly 100 fifth and sixth grade students, visited the Mint and listened to a conference with a slide show. The parents of the students also visited the Mint, and heard the same talk, on the 17th. It was decided that the Association would sponsor an art contest. All the students who visited the Mint participated with their own interpretation about what they learned. The Association offered first, second and third place prizes, that were donated by Juan Francisco Saez, owner of "DOBLON" coin shop, in Segovia, and treasurer of the Association.
On June 12th, the panel of judges, composed of teachers of the School, selected the 10 best drawings. The top 3 places were each awarded a coin struck in Segovia and a coin catalog. The top 10 have their drawings posted here on the Associacion's web site. The prizes were given at the end of the school-year party, with much applause by all present. Then the Association presented the School with honorary membership for the good work done in promoting knowledge about the Segovia Mint and numismatics. On presenting the distinction to the School, Juan Francisco Saez announced that "most of today's great numismatists started collecting coins when they were between 7 and 10 years old, and as such, it is important to promote this safe and educational passtime in schools."
