Screw-press coiningThough the screw-press was first used to strike coins in the early sixteenth century, the early versions were only capable of producing small coins, thus the roller-mill technology became more popular at first. Screw-presses were installed in the Madrid and Seville Mints around 1700 and in 1772 in Segovia. This type of press was later adapted to be powered by steam engines in the mid-nineteenth century and their basic function is similar to todays modern electric coining presses.
