EUROPA NOSTRA GRAND
PRIZE AWARD Taormina,
Sicily, Italy.
June 5, 2009 First
of all, I would like to thank Europa Nostra for having taken special note
of my work to bring the famous Segovia Mint back to life from its
forgotten and ruinous state of abandonment. But,
I must insist that the most important thing about all of this is NOT
myself, but the importance of the structure itself, built in 1583, which
we are proving through detailed research to be the "oldest, most advanced and complete industrial manufacturing
plant still standing in the entire world", established a
full 200 years before the Industrial Revolution. While
the reconstruction of the building is almost completed, we still have no
funding for the creation and instalation of the Museum of Minting Technology. Our Association is now promoting the future museum as the Key
Project of the Candidacy of Segovia to become the European
Capital of Culture in 2016. We
hope that in this way, the candidacy will help attract funding for the
Mint Museum, and that the Mint will help Segovia's bid to become the
European Capital of Culture. Of
course, I would also like to thank the Chamber of Commerce of Segovia,
whose president Jesus Postigo is here with me today, for having submitted
my name as candidate for this prize, which I am going to donate in its
entirety to the Friends of the Segovia Mint Association.
Last
but not least, I would like to welcome everyone here to visit our website to learn more about the Segovia Mint, and
of course, to come to Segovia to visit us in person. |
